Looking beyond the borders of North America, strip-till is even more of a foreign practice — pun intended. But it is one which is seeing momentum in some parts of Europe.
Brian Goggin spent 26 years with the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service where he spent 5 years in the southeast Balkan states, where he helped introduce and advance conservation tillage practices and soil health principles into the region.
After retiring in 2015, Brian took the lead on a grant funded project to further educate and implement strip-till practices onto large-scale farms in Bulgaria. He leads a team of agronomists and agricultural engineers teaching cover cropping techniques, equipment setups and fertilizer placement on operations as large as 100,000 hectares, the equivalent of almost 250,000 acres.
In today’s Strip-Till Farmer podcast brought to you by Topcon Agriculture, Brian shares his experience heading up the strip-till overseas initiative to include some of the results, challenges and future opportunities.
