The latest USDA Crop Progress report shows both corn planting and emergence rates are well ahead of last year's progress. The report shows 97% of corn planted in the week ended June 7, 2020, above 78% of corn planted this time last year and the 5 year average of 94%. Minnesota, Nebraska and North Carolina all reported 100% of their corn planted.
A reported 89% of corn has emerged at the end of the week, well above the 57% of corn emerged this same week in 2019 and slightly above the 84% emerged 5 year average. North Carolina led the charge at 98% of its corn emerged, followed by Iowa, Minnesota and Texas with 97% of corn emerged.
Nearly one third of the week's corn crop, 60% was reported in "good" condition and 15% was reported in "excellent" condition. This was an improvement from the previous year's crop this time last year, which was reported as 52% "good" condition and 7% "excellent" condition.
The report showed 86% of soybeans planted at the end of the week, above the 54% planted this time last year and 79% 5 year average. Minnesota reported 99% of its soybean crop planted, while Nebraska reported 98% planted.
One third of the week's soybeans were reported emerged, more than double the 30% reported emerged this time last week and the 61% 5 year average. Minnesota reported 89% of soybeans emerged in the week, followed by Louisiana and Iowa at 87%.
The reported showed 60% of soybean crops in "good" condition (unchanged from last week) and 12% in "excellent" condition, above the 10% reported "excellent" last week.
