Cover crops have many demonstrated conservation and soil health benefits, yet their use is still limited by perceived financial fears: crop yield reduction or no short-term return.
In this session, farmer and former research agronomist for the University of Wisconsin Extension, Jim Stute provide a data-driven look at crop yield response, weed suppression, nutrient scavenging, and cover effects in a drought year. In combination, the multiple benefits have potential to create a positive return for covers as a stand-alone practice without cost-share. While the data is drawn from no-till systems, it has application in strip-till situations.
