Strip-Tiller’s Irrigated Field Yields 357 Bushels Per Acre
The winners of the National Corn Growers Association’s 2022 National Corn Yield Contest have been announced. Strip-tiller Miles Peterson achieved the highest irrigated yield of the entire competition with 357.9817 bushels per acre. This article from Progressive Farmer breaks down all the results and the stories behind the winning operations.
Things to Consider Before Making Crop Rotation Changes
In his latest Boots in the Field podcast, Farm Journal Field Agronomist Ken Ferrie fields questions from farmers looking to establish new cropping plans in 2023. “When we grow the same crop back-to-back, we have to be realistic,” Ferrie says. “For growing corn-on-corn, we plug in a 10-15 bushel drop in yield. For beans-on-beans the drop is typically 5-7 bushels per acre.”
Cover Crops & Weed Control Explored at Soil Management Summit
The University of Minnesota Extension hosted the 2022 Soil Management Summit this past week. The event featured presentations from researchers, farmers and agricultural advisors. Strip-till expert Jodi DeJong-Hughes provided play-by-play on Twitter including a look at the relationship between cereal rye and weed suppression.
@UMNExt Liz Stahl showing the relationship btwn cereal rye #covercrop and weed suppression. We don't usually get 9000#/ac of biomass when planted in the fall but it would work great for prevent plant or after a short season crop. #SMS2022 #SoilHealth pic.twitter.com/P9qcI7y9mN

Is the Fallacy of Phosphorous Real?
Jon Stevens is one of the most entertaining ag personalities on YouTube. There’s a reason he has nearly 8,000 subscribers. In his latest video, the Minnesota strip-tiller talks about his soil health journey, which started in 2013 when he switched from conventional tillage practices to no-till and strip-till. He reveals how a decade’s worth of soil tests are causing him to question everything he learned about farming growing up.
Is 30 Inches the Best Row Width for Corn?
Jason Webster and his crew at Precision Planting’s PTI Farm tackled the question of what’s the best row width for corn in this episode of InsidePTI. “We’ve been using 30s for a long time, and now the question is, is there going to be a point when we can change?” Webster asks. Watch the video to find out what he thinks and see the differences between 30, 20 and 15-inch row corn on the PTI Farm.
