The Challenges of Being a Strip-Till Pioneer

Southern Alberta farmer John Kolk is the first in his area to strip-till. Being a trailblazer has come with its fair share of challenges, as he shares in this article from Alberta Farmer Express. “You don’t have the service people so it’s a little bit of a stretch to try it here,” Kolk says. “We checked around and there were only two people we found in southern Alberta that were doing any strip-tillage or some iteration of it. As in most changes in management, it takes a while to make it work. You’ve got to grit your teeth and work your way through it.”

This photo, taken 2 minutes after both samples were placed in the water, shows how the no-tilled and cover cropped soil holds together, while the tilled soil explodes.
