Strip-Tiller Builds Toolbar to Interseed Cover Crops
Brownfield Ag News catches up with longtime Ohio strip-tiller and no-tiller Jeff Duling. The Ottawa, Ohio native talks about his custom-built toolbar that allows him to interseed cover crops into corn when he applies mid-season fertilizer and when he strip-tills.
New Strip-Till Machines Tackle Tough Residue
“There’s been a wave of new tools and tech accelerating adoption of strip-tillage practices,” writes Rick Haun in the latest edition of his Equipment Connection series. Haun details the unique features and benefits of the latest strip-till offerings from Kuhn Krause, Sunflower, Unverferth, Vulcan, Zimmerman and John Deere.
Delayed Cover Crop Termination Could Prove Beneficial
Check out how planting green and roller crimping could save strip-tillers time, reduce herbicide applications and maintain moisture during drought years without impacting yields, according to farmer-led research, coordinated by the nonprofit North Jersey Resource Conservation & Development.
Strip-Tilling into Fall Cover Crops
Illinois strip-tiller Joseph Curless shares his cover crop/strip-till gameplan on X (formerly known as Twitter). It looks like he’s going to strip-till into triticale and vetch that was planted into soybeans in September.
Aerial applied Triticale/Vetch into early senescing (yellowing) soybeans in early September 23. Will strip till into after harvest and plant ‘24 directly on the strip and terminate triticale/vetch after corn planting depending on moisture level. Strip-Till Improves Moisture-Holding Capacity of Fields
This article from Iowa Farmer Today makes the case for strip-till as a great option in a drought year. “Strip-till has been able to save some of the crops in northeast Iowa that only saw a few inches of rain during May or June this year,” Iowa State agronomist Angie Rieck-Hinz says.
