Farmer Shares Playbook for Strip-Tilling in Cover Crops

Manito, Ill., strip-tiller Opey Rowell shares his strip-till strategies in this Prairie Farmer feature. Rowell broadcasts cereal rye in late October. When it’s 2-3 inches tall, he makes strips through the rye with a Schlagel Rapid Till. Then in the spring, he plants soybeans in the strips, and then terminates the cereal rye with his preemergence sprayer pass. “Strip-till lets you farm around the cover crop, so you still get all the cover crop benefits,” Rowell says.

Strip-Tilling Between 20-Inch Corn Rows
