What’s the Ideal Planting Depth?

Planting depth was a hot topic at the Precision Planting Winter Conference last week. Regional manager Mike Schlitt shared results from a study that compared corn planting depths of 1-3.5 inches in 6 different locations in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and South Dakota. How deep should strip-tillers plant? It depends on the soil type — that’s the key takeaway from Schlitt. Different soil types retain moisture at different depths, he said. Precision Planting’s general recommendation is to plant at least 1.5 inches deep and at a 30% moisture level. During his presentation, Schlitt plugged the SmartFirmer product, which is a seed firmer-sensor that measures soil moisture and allows farmers to adjust their depth as they plant in different soil types.

Strip-Till & Cereal Rye a Winning Combo after Potato Harvest

Leonard, N.D., farmer Tyler Zimmerman shared these photos on X. He says he leased his interseeder to a friend to seed rye strips after potato harvest. “I’ll strip-till his fertilizer next spring for corn,” Zimmerman says. “Definitely looks like it worked out well for him. This potato field won’t be blowing away.”

New Grant for Missouri Farmers Encourages Strip-Till

Missouri farmers will soon have the chance to participate in the Precision Conservation Management Program, which helps boost conservation practices in the state. The program was made possible by grant funding from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, which is part of a $14.7 million NFWF fund awarded nationwide to advance soil health and improve water quality. Kurt Boeckmann, director of environmental programs with Missouri Corn, discusses the program in this interview with Brownfield Ag News.
