Iowa Family Commits to Conservation with Strip-Till, Covers & Grazing
The Hildreth family earned the 2024 Iowa Farm Environmental Leader Award for their conservation practices in Rockwell City, Iowa. Conner Hildreth strip-tills 100% of his corn acres and uses cover crops and no-till on about 30% of his acres. Read all about his system in this article from The Messenger.
Strip-Tiller Named Researcher of the Year for Manure Project
CropLife profiles its 2024 Educator/Researcher of the Year — Algona, Iowa, strip-tiller Nancy Bohl Bormann. She earned her PhD at the Univ. of Minnesota while conducting a research project centered on the development and implementation of a nationwide manure test database called ManureDB. Read more about the project and her farming journey in this article.
Strip-Tiller Voices Frustrations Over Lack of Farm Bill
Central Minnesota strip-tiller Roy Schneider tells Brownfield Ag he’s frustrated congress hasn’t passed a new farm bill since 2018. He says the bill provides critical resources that make it possible for him to try conservation practices like strip-till. “There was a program for it (and) to be honest, it would’ve been an impossible leap without some sort of program. And I’m hesitant to say that because I’m just not a huge fan of everything we do needs to have a program,” he says.
Drip Irrigation Helps Nebraska Farmer Switch to Strip-Till
In this Successful Farming feature, Andy Jobman explains how drip irrigation allowed his family to move their entire farm from ridge-till to strip-till. He says the change has resulted in higher soil organic matter. “Having that extra percent or two of soil organic matter and soil cover from the residue helps with our water usage,” Jobman says.
Spring Strip-Tilling in a Circle
ETS does a “ride-a-long” with Fort Morgan, Colo., dairy farmer Stratton Kraft as he runs a SoilWarrior in a circle during the spring. Kraft is scheduled to speak at the 2025 National Strip-Tillage Conference about his system, which includes the incorporation of cover crops and liquid dairy manure. Register Now »
