2025 Master Farmer Reaps the Benefits of Strip-Till & Cover Crops
Prairie Farmer features Frederick, Ill., strip-tiller Chet Esther, who received the 2025 Master Farmer honor. Esther strip-tills most of his corn. He split applies N — 120 pounds in the fall and the rest with Y-drops in the spring when corn is about 1.5-feet tall. He’s also experimented with cover crops on around 800 acres, and has noticed a positive impact of weed control. “I like what cover crops do for the soil,” he says. “Even though rye costs $15 to seed in the fall, I think you get it back in the spring with one less pass of chemical.”
Record-Breaking Strip-Tiller Shares Detailed Look at Management Practices
In this presentation from Genesis Ag, Charles City, Va., strip-tiller David Hula deep dives into his high-yield strategies including biological applications and soil management techniques.
How U.S. Soybean Farmers Are Making Fields More Sustainable
Soybean growth is on the rise in the U.S. and with it comes a host of environmental impacts. American soybean farmers are starting to reduce tillage, among other strategies, resulting in a much lower carbon footprint than many other soy-producing countries.
When Can You Expect to See a Yield Bump with Strip-Till?
I recently heard from an East Coast farmer who’s run into some challenges in his attempt to get started with strip-till. Here’s what he tells me, as shared in the Strip-Till Farmer Email Discussion Group: “We had the opportunity to rent a SoilWarrior coulter unit strip till machine. We cut our fertilizer rates by 1/3, and we obviously appreciated the seedbed quality over no-till. BUT, we did not see any yield increase whatsoever compared to no-till. We also did not see a tremendous fertilizer savings because we use poultry manure. We have enough phosphorus in our soils that whatever generation past me in 50-60 years probably will not have to apply MAP or DAP to the land and still have the potential to grow 250–300-bushel corn. In some fields the poultry manure had so much potassium that we didn't even need to apply any fertilizer besides nitrogen and sulfur, and in our sandy soils those applications are mainly made at planting or post-planting to minimize leaching. We ran a SoilWarrior two years in a row and did not see anything that would make us money. Fertilizer savings, yield increases (less than 2 bu/ac), all of that lead us to seeing a return on our investment in 15-20 years minimum. Ultimately, I want to make strip-till work, because it is a much nicer seedbed, and I think it could help us to have cover crops growing longer into the spring without having to terminate them so they can increase the N and K they provide to our crop.” Does anyone have some words of advice that I can pass along to him? Ag Products That Are Worth Every Penny
“What’s an ag product that you’ve used lately that you think is worth every dollar?” … That question on X generated a lot of interesting responses (check out the comments). Chris Kasten, 2023 National Strip-Tillage Conference speaker, chimes in with his thoughts: Test everything and don’t go broke doing it.
Great post! Comments are worth a browse. Farmers have an incredible “BS radar” and now that we’ve reached the logical end of trade show season, the white pickups will be extra “buzzy.” Get ready to hear some incredible stories.
