Strip-Tillers Increase Water Use Efficiency
St. John, Kan., strip-tillers Marlyn and Kathie Spare were named Kansas Master Farmers by FarmProgress. The Spares started strip-tilling in 2006 to reduce wind erosion and improve nutrient use efficiency. They’re also harnessing the power of precision technology in their water conservation efforts. “We’re using an app on our phone that can give us an indication where the center pivot is, and we can shut them off, and we can start a couple of them with the app,” Marlyn says. “By and large, it makes us aware what’s going on with the center pivot 24/7.
#Plant25: Strip-Till Planting vs. No-Till Planting
25,000 views and counting for this strip-till vs. no-till video from Patrick Shivers on YouTube. Shivers compares the process of planting no-till and strip-till corn, using a KMC strip-till bar and John Deere MaxEmerge planters.
Building a Simple, Flexible Cover Crop Gameplan for Strip-Till
North Dakota strip-tillers Keith and Karl Batholomay dive into their cover crop strategies in this Successful Farming feature. The father-son team custom-seeds rye into standing corn when it’s about a foot high with a home-built interseeder. “Our overall production system is so much more resilient,” Bartholomay says. “We rarely have a crop failure, and we typically have good yields. When you add livestock to the system, growing cover crops is a no-brainer. But even without livestock, I believe growing cover crops pays off in the long run.”
Lessons Learned from 7 Years of Soybean Planting Data
Jason Webster, PTI Farm manager and 2023 National Strip-Tillage Conference Best Speaker Award recipient, breaks down planting data to show why the 2nd week of April might be the best time to plant soybeans.
Idaho Strip-Tiller Keeps Finger on Pulse of Precision Technology
Fourth-generation strip-tiller Blake Matthews explains how he’s using precision technology to elevate his sugar beet operation in Oakley, Idaho. Matthews, CropLife’s 2024 Ag Tech Awards of Excellence winner in the precision farming category, is taking a closer look at drone technology in 2025. “We’ve dabbled with them the last couple of years and have had some custom spraying done,” Matthews says. “We’ve also used them for imagery, but not to the full extent. That’s something that I would like to try and get into a little bit more.”
