With farmland recently selling for more than $21,000 an acre in Iowa, saving $5.93 an acre may seem like a drop in the bucket. But paying attention to dollars and cents makes great sense to Cresco, Iowa strip-tiller Frank Moore, who's been farming for more than 35 years.
A study by China Agricultural University's Department of Grassland Science and the Edisto Research & Education Center in Blackville, S.C., found that strip-till is the preferred environment for growing corn in the dryland, rain-fed regions in the southeastern Corn Belt.
Using strip-till and placing fertilizers 6 to 8 inches directly below the seed increased corn grain yields on the higher elevations, where severely eroded soils were largely devoid of crop nutrients, by 12% the first year and 26% the second year.
Tile drainage, patience and state and federal financial incentives are some of the things that make strip-till work, says Northfield, Minn., strip-tiller David Legvold, who is one of the speakers at the 2012 National No-Tillage Conference.
More no-tillers are finding fertilizing and tilling a 6- to 8-inch narrow band of soil in the fall and planting into this strip the following spring definitely boosts corn yields.
Despite the fact that an unusually wet fall and planting delays kept many wheat farmers from applying starter nitrogen, an Ohio State University Extension educator says they shouldn't rush to apply spring nitrogen earlier than needed.
Many strip-tillers incorporate application of various fertilizers — nitrogen, phosphate and potash — when strips are being made. Anhydrous ammonia, a common source of nitrogen, can be toxic to germinating seeds and root systems when applied too close to the seed.
