Strip-tilling fields in southern South Dakota is underway, as of last week, according to Joey Hanson, a custom strip-tiller from Elk Point, S.D. “We started on April 8, and ran for three days,” he says. “I’ve done 600 acres so far — three times the amount I was able to strip-till in the spring of 2019.”
For agronomist Joey Hanson, Elk Point, S.D., spring 2020 is business as usual — so far. Hanson, owner of Diversified Agronomy, a crop consulting and custom strip-till business, has been assisting his 30-plus customers in South Dakota and Nebraska get ready for planting season.
Most strip-tillers I visit tend to be loyal practitioners or, at the very least, recent converts who are seeing enough promise to continue their journey. But there are certainly those who struggle and perhaps even question their decision.
