Transitioning into strip-till was a strategic decision for Charles City, Va., farmer David Hula. A no-tiller since 1984, he converted a portion of corn acreage on his operation to strip-till.
Seeking an opportunity to continue pushing corn yields, David made several passes in 2018, also applying fertilizer, seeing a 37-bushel per acre yield bump in the first field he strip-tilled.
For the 2019 cropping year, David won the annual National Corn Growers Assn. high-yield competition for corn, for a fifth time, with a record total of more than 616 bushels per acre on strip-tilled ground.
We caught up with David to discuss some of the early returns, lessons learned and future opportunity with incorporating strip-till practices on his farm operation.
We also heard from Olin, Iowa, strip-tiller Darin Stolte who started strip-tilling in 2014 and shares some of the specifics of his intensive fertility program that follow the 4R philosophy for nutrient management.
