Keith Schlapkohl is taking aim at 300-bushel corn and 100-bushel soybeans, and strip-till is just one of the practices he’s using in his systems approach to high productivity. The Stockton, Iowa, farmer runs nearly 1,000 acres of strip-tilled corn-on-corn and also lays down 30-inch-row strips ahead of soybeans following corn.

Schlapkohl will address seven things he’s identified that are helping him hit consistently high yields, including planter row-unit setups that help him deliver consistent seed placement in corn-on-corn acres; fertility placement and needs for soybeans, which he labels a “nutrient hog;” experiences strip-tilling both in the fall and spring and his preferences; efforts to be “vertical” when strip-tilling in the spring to leave better berm conditions; his preferences for phosphorus and lime applications; his evolution from a single- to a twin-row coulter system; and differentiating the fertility needs for corn and soybeans.
