Dave Legvold’s 38-year journey from conventional tillage to strip-till has been a process of experimentation, building confidence in a system and using onfarm research to drive his decision-making. The Northfield, Minn., strip-tiller will share his strategies for improving soil health, nutrient efficiency, water retention and a systems approach to water management using tile to create a flourishing strip-till system.

Legvold will share his personal experience with split nitrogen applications and tracking the economic returns from efficient nitrogen use in strip-till, as shaped by experimentation with precision soil-sampling techniques through a research partnership with St. Olaf’s College in Northfield, Minn. Legvold will show how the combination of strip-till and research is paying off with corn yields increasing by 10 to 20 bushels per acre during the last 5 years.
